TSA asks industry for information on stationary boarding pass scanner tech and support

The TSA is looking for "out-of-the-box" ready technology and must work with minimal setup to start performing screenings.

WASHINGTON - The Department of Homeland Security's Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is asking, as part of market research, for information about its boarding pass scanner (BPS) technology and support for use by Transportation Security Officers at airport screening locations.

TSA’s identity management (IDM) is responsible for the authentication and validation of passenger identification documents. The TSA uses BPS in the field to scan relevant passenger information that is located within the barcode on the boarding pass to retrieve secure flight (SF) screening information.

The technology sought by the TSA will be used in a fixed location BPS will be placed in a location, such as on a podium or mounted on a stanchion, and perform screening activities while remaining stationary during normal duty. Units that require movement in order to perform screening activities are not operationally viable. The BPS must be flatbed in its form factor. A flatbed BPS is a system with a flat surface on which you lay boarding passes to be scanned and processed. The BPS shall have dimensions no greater than 12 inches tall, wide, and deep, and weigh less than 15 pounds.

The TSA says that acceptable initial setup interactions include unpacking the unit, mounting the unit, plugging it into an outlet or putting in a battery, turning on the unit, charging the battery before use, or configuring the unit without the use of a computer or external device. Unacceptable activities include configuring BPS using a computer or external device or updating firmware or software version.
