SPARKS, Nev., 7 June 2009. Officials at the U.S. Naval Sea Systems Command in Washington are looking to Sierra Nevada Corp. in Sparks, Nev., to build 200 electronic warfare RF jammers designed to protect foot soldiers from radio-controlled improvised explosive devices (RCIEDs).
The Navy awarded Sierra Neva a $36.5 million contract Friday to produce 200 Joint Counter Radio-Controlled Improvised Explosive Device Electronic Warfare (J-CREW) 3.1 dismounted systems for U.S. soldiers and Marines in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Sierra Nevada prevailed in a JCREW 3.1 contracting competition among three defense companies, which in addition to Sierra Nevada included ITT Corp. in Annapolis Junction, Md., and Northrop Grumman Space & Mission Systems in San Diego.
Sierra Nevada should be finished with this job by December 2010. With options, this contract ultimately could earn Sierra Nevada as much as $248.3 million to produce as many as 2,300 JCREW 3.1 systems.
