Navy chooses Nufern for military-grade optical fiber for Trident ballistic missile upgrades

EAST GRANBY, Conn., 7 Nov. 2010. Submarine-launched ballistic missile specialists in the U.S. Navy needed rugged optical fiber for the modernization and life extension of the Trident nuclear ballistic missile guidance system. They found their solution from military optical fiber specialist Nufern in East Granby, Conn. The Navy selected Nufern as the lead optical fiber supplier supporting the system upgrades and technology insertion for the Trident missile program. Nufern has been supplying the fiber for Trident since March 2009 and won a multimillion-dollar life of type buy (LOTB) contract to supply several mega-meters of fiber for the Trident program through July 2013. Â

The D5 Trident ballistic missile launches from Navy Ohio-class missile submarines.
Nufern has worked with the Draper Laboratory in Cambridge, Mass. -- the prime contractor for modernizing the Trident guidance system-- as well as the program's inertial sensor subcontractor, Honeywell Inc., to develop optical fibers for Trident's fiber optic gyroscopes.
