Sterling Heights is headquarters to General Dynamics Land Systems -- maker of the M1 Abrams main battle tank and Stryker armored combat vehicle, and borders Warren, Mich., headquarters of U.S. Army Tank-Automotive Command.Curtiss-Wright, through its acquisitions 10 years ago of Lau Defense Systems and Vista Controls, has expertise in vetronics for fire control, aiming, stabilization, munitions loading, and environmental control in military combat vehicles such as the Army's M2 Bradley Fighting Vehicle, M1 tank, and Stryker brigade combat vehicle.The Electronic Systems group of Curtiss-Wright Controls builds rugged deployed aerospace and defense subsystems. The new office is staffed and located to best support defense companies in the Detroit area that focus on combat vehicle systems, company officials say.
