ARLINGTON, Va., 7 Dec. 2011. Executives of Thales Group in Arlington, Va., is seeking to enhance their company's expertise in wideband satellite communications (SATCOM) with their acquisition of Tampa Microwave in Tampa, Fla. Tampa Microwave designs and builds SATCOM terminals for government and commercial applications.

Thales signed an agreement to acquire Tampa Microwave, a privately held RF and microwave company. The acquisition is subject to regulatory approvals and should close in early 2012, Thales officials say. Financial terms were not released.

Tampa Microwave will operate as a subsidiary of Thales Communications Inc. in Clarksburg, Md., a Thales USA company which operates under a proxy agreement with the U.S. Department of Defense. The business will maintain its location in Tampa, Fla., and the current Tampa Microwave management team will remain unchanged, Thales officials say.

"The acquisition provides Thales with the capability to support DoD initiatives for wideband technology-voice, video, and data-at the tactical level," says Michael Sheehan, president and chief executive officer of Thales Communications.

The acquisition will enable Thales to offer wideband, beyond-line-of-sight communications where small size, light weight, and low power consumption are crucial factors for warfighters, company officials say.
