PMC ATM network interface for military systems upgrades introduced by Beyond Electronics
RALEIGH, N.C., 22 March 2013. Beyond Electronics Corp. in Raleigh, N.C., is introducing the OC-3 PCI Mezzanine Card (PMC)-based ATM network interface card (NBC) for embedded computing technology insertion and systems upgrades in aerospace and defense applications that operate in harsh environments.
The OC-3, which complies with Wide Area Network (WAN) standards, is designed to relieve obsolescence problems by using technologies to replacing aging ones, company officials say.
The product is register compatible with relatively old Integrated Device Technology IDT77211A hardware thus reducing software, integration and test costs involved in maintenance and upgrades.
Most deployments of relatively old systems will required little to no change in system or application software, company officials say. The NBC is designed using a combination of a general-purpose communications processor coupled with a high density complex programmable logic device (CPLD).
This approach so closely mimics the original hardware that a system cannot distinguish the difference from the relatively old product except by interrogating some of the added have registers or by examining the EPROM based product signature, company officials say.
An optical interface can enable connection to DIN LSA 47256 (IEC 61754-3 ed 1.0) terminated fiber. As with the NBC, the implementation uses technologies, including the design of stainless steel replacement connectors.
The OC-3 PMC-ATM NBC supports CBR and UBR service classes and has the infrastructure in place to support VBR and ABR. It has been tested with most popular TCP/IP protocols, and is compatible with software and drivers available on VxWorks from Wind River Systems as well as Linux.
Built in test is also provided with the product allowing high coverage testing to be performed in system ensuring reliable operation. The PMC-ATM can be programmed to act as a transparent media converter. The host system continues to run existing ATM drivers while the physical media and external protocol is converted to Ethernet.
