Russian commercial passenger jet manufacturer looks to Curtiss-Wright for flight data recorder

CHRISTCHURCH, England, 4 Aug. 2013. Avionics designers at Russian aircraft manufacturer Irkut Corp. in Moscow needed a flight data recording system for the MC-21 single-aisle passenger jetliner. They found their solution from Curtiss-Wright Controls Avionics & Electronics division in Christchurch, England.

Curtiss-Wright will provide Irkut with the MC-21's ISSKOR data recorder system, an integrated flight data acquisition, monitoring, processing, and recording solution. Irkut is a subsidiary of United Aircraft Corp. in Moscow.

The initial contract is worth $21 million, with an estimated potential value in excess of $50 million over the life of the program, Curtiss-Wright officials say. Shipment of the products is scheduled to begin in February 2015.

Under the agreement, Curtiss-Wright will develop the ISSKOR integrated flight data recorder for Irkut using products and technologies from CWC-AE. The ISSKOR system comprises dual imaging multi purpose flight recorders, an integrated cockpit control unit, a cockpit area camera, dual recorder independent power supplies, dual cockpit area microphones, an integrated flight data acquisition unit, an antenna and an accelerometer.

The Irkut MC-21 aircraft is a twin-engine short-range and mid-range jet airliner with a capacity of 150 to 212 passengers being developed and manufactured in Russia by Irkut and the Yakovlev Design Bureau of the United Aircraft Corp. (UAC) group.

"Curtiss-Wright's data recording and acquisition systems technology will bring state-of-the-art capabilities to the MC-21," says Oleg Nesterov, procurement director at United Aircraft Corp.

The Curtiss-Wright Controls CWC-AE division will build the products covered by this agreement at its Christchurch, England facility. The products will be shipped to Irkut in Moscow.
