NASHUA, N.H., 1 Dec. 2016. Real-time software specialists at Wind River, an Intel company in Alameda, Calif., have received a platinum award in the 2016 Military & Aerospace Electronics and Intelligent Aerospace Technology Innovation Awards for the company's VxWorks® 653 safety-critical software.
The award to the Wind River VxWorks® 653 software is part of the top of three tiers of this year's Technology Innovation Awards. The top award level is platinum, the middle tier is gold, and the third tier is silver.
Military & Aerospace Electronics and Intelligent Aerospace made awards to company entries that offer solutions to difficult aerospace and defense electronics design challenges. The awards were presented on 14 Nov. 2016.
The VxWorks® 653 software is a commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) platform for delivering safety-critical integrated modular avionics. It complies with ARINC specification 653, providing partitioning in time and space to ensure fault containment, and enabling reduced SWaP, as well as a reduced bill of materials (BOM) on advanced aircraft.
The Wind River software uses a certifiable hypervisor layer to take advantage of multicore hardware that until now has not been approved for safety-critical systems.

Used by over 200 customers in over 400 programs and flying in over 80 aircraft, and supported by 24 partners, it serves in commercial, space, safety-, and mission-critical manned and unmanned programs, including Airbus and Boeing commercial and military aircraft such as the Airbus A400M and Boeing 787.
A certifiable hypervisor layer underneath the module operating system takes advantage of multicore hardware that until now, has not been approved for safety systems. This is coupled with a companion certifiable guest as the partition operating system.
Dividing up the system in this way enables parallel processing on the available cores in the system, and can execute other guest operating systems. The certified XML configuration tool separates application from system software to minimize recertification costs when subsystems change.
