EAST AURORA, N.Y., 30 July 2010.Avionics designers at the Moog Aircraft Group in East Aurora, N.Y., needed solenoids for the flight control system on the Boeing 787 Dreamliner passenger jetliner. They found their solution from the Curtiss-Wright Motion Control segment in Tempe, Ariz.
Moog awarded a potential $20 million contract to Curtiss-Wright (NYSE:CW) to provide solenoids for the 787 Dreamliner avionics, and will do the work at the Curtiss-Wright Motion Control facilities in Tempe, Ariz., and Nogales, Mexico. Production starts now and extends through 2035, Curtiss-Wright officials say.
A solenoid refers either to a wire coil wound into a tightly packed helix that produces a magnetic field when an electric current passes through it, or to a transducer that converts energy into linear motion to do tasks like operating electrical switches or actuating valves.
