High-speed data transfer connectors for in-flight entertainment and avionics debut in Farnborough

FARNBOROUGH, England – Designed to be replaceable and installed directly by customers into the shell itself, the new RPR EN4165-style receptacle with PCB Contacts from ITT’s Cannon brand—which is touted as a new lightweight, modular interconnect solution for high-speed data transfer—was introduced on Monday at the Farnborough International Show.

FARNBOROUGH, England – Designed to be replaceable and installed directly by customers into the shell itself, the new RPR EN4165-style receptacle with PCB Contacts from ITT’s Cannon brand—which is touted as a new lightweight, modular interconnect solution for high-speed data transfer—was introduced on Monday at the Farnborough International Show.

At the ITT booth, Dom Lecce, Product Marketing Manager, ITT Cannon, explained that the new RPR is a result of increasing industry demands.

“With this product, we are responding to the industry’s need for ease of assembly for PCB applications with higher-bandwidth requirements,” he said. “It allows users ease of assembly of the insert to the PCB board and ease of disassembly of the insert from the panel mounted shell after completion, allowing for easy reparability, which is becoming more and more important for customers.”

Targeting deployment in in-flight entertainment/connectivity and avionics systems, the RPR connector is comprised of shells, plates, inserts, and a proprietary latching mechanism packaged and integrated in a compact design.

In terms of what else is happening with ITT, Lecce explained that the company has also released the BKAARINC 600 rack and panel with stamped PCB contacts, which the company had on display at the show. This product was released, according to Lecce, because of the need toreduce weight and cost in aircraft equipment. Developed to support the air transportation market, the blind mate connectors are designed per ARINC 600 and are available in three and six-gang configurations that accommodate up to 800 low insertion force contacts.

Furthermore, Lecce explained that the company has also recently designed an aluminum-based hermetic connector for pressure applications that is 40% less in weight from traditional hermetic connectors, which use heavier steel materials. This product, he said, was designed as a result of customers looking to reduce weight.

When the conversation shifted toward trends and technology worth monitoring, Lecce noted that ITT has seen a trend in the use of stamped and formed contact technology in commercial air applications. This, he suggested, is a result of customers wanting to reduce overall system costs and weight without compromising product performance.

“ITT Cannon continues to drive state-of-the-art connector systems for harsh environments, with high reliability,” he said. “We must constantly respond and meet expanding requirements and expectations.”
