KLM backs design of fuel-efficient 'Flying V' aircraft

KLM signed an agreement June 3 with the Netherlands' Delft University of Technology at the IATA Annual General Meeting in Seoul to fund the design of a 'Flying-V' aircraft.

SEOUL, South Korea - "Flying wing" aircraft date to before the Second World War, though largely in military designs. KLM Royal Dutch Airlines plans to fund the design of a new jet in that style into the commercial realm as a way to improve fuel economy in its fleet. KLM signed an agreement June 3 with the Netherlands' Delft University of Technology at the IATA Annual General Meeting in Seoul.

The concept, known as the "Flying-V" will have the same wingspan as an Airbus A350, though it will not be as long. Since it has the same wingspan as other commercial jets, it will be able to use current airport runways. Passengers and cargo will all fly in the wings of the aircraft.

KLM says the Flying-V will hold the same number of passengers (314 in standard configuration) as well as the same amount of cargo as the A350 while its lower aerodynamic resistance will use 20% less fuel than the Airbus widebody.

A flying scale model and a full-size section of the interior of the Flying-V will be officially presented at the KLM Experience Days at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol in October on the occasion of KLM’s 100th anniversary.

KLM notes that while the twin-engined jet would fly using kerosene, "It can easily be adapted to make use of innovations in the propulsion system – by using electrically-boosted turbofans for example."
