HAMBURG, Germany - Airbus needed a flexible satellite connectivity solution for its new HBCplus technology. They found their solution from Inmarsat in London. In addition, Airbus has selected Safran Passenger Innovations in Brea, Calif., to provide Ka terminals and integrate ThinKom's antennas for the passenger aircraft giant's new Airspace Link HBCplus technology.

The Airspace Link HBCplus enables enable airlines to connect to a choice of Managed Service Providers (MSPs) via a new certified terminal and radome built as part of the aircraft. In the future it is planned to extend HBCplus to include MSPs which offer Ku-band services.

"We are honored that Airbus has chosen Inmarsat as the first Managed Service Provider for this transformative connectivity catalogue solution and is putting its trust in our award-winning GX Aviation service across all of its aircraft programs," Philippe Carette, president of Inmarsat Aviation says. "Inmarsat looks forward to working closely with our partners Airbus and SPI to deliver continuous innovation for airlines and their passengers worldwide."

The Airspace Link HBCplus will enable off-board connectivity to satellites in the Airspace Link open ecosystem.

At the June 2022 Aircraft Interiors Expo in Hamburg Airbus is introducing the first elements of a real open connected ecosystem which is called ‘Airspace Link’.

“Airspace Link is a multi-layered and flexible approach, which starts with the Intelligent Core Management Platform – ICMP. This is the digital backbone covering the cabin management system as well as other layers,” explains André Schneider, VP of Cabin & Cargo Program at Airbus.

The iCMP is SFE hardware provided by Airbus and is a replacement for its “Cabin Intercommunication Data System (CIDS). iCMP uses fiber-optic technology and provides the infrastructure for a digital smart platform enabling data access and management, content hosting, including IFE, and cabin management controls. iCMP full functionalities platform will be available on cross-program starting with A320 family from 2026.
