20 September 2022 - Air transportation IT provider SITA laid out four areas it sees as growth opportunities for technology in commercial air travel, including self-boarding gates. Approximately 22% of carriers have rolled out self-boarding with biometric scans, and that figure is slated to jump up to 62% by 2024.

Other areas of growth for airport tech includes security, analytics and data management - including AI - as well as "green" energy sources.
