magniX says the lightweight, high-speed engines are suited for a range of rotorcraft, from light single-engine helicopters to larger hybrid-electric twin-engine models, as well as airborne power generation applications.

EVERETT, Wash. - magniX, an electric aviation company in Everett, Wash., has unveiled its  HeliStorm electric engine series, which is designed specifically for helicopters. The lightweight, high-speed engines are suited for a range of rotorcraft, from light single-engine helicopters to larger hybrid-electric twin-engine models and airborne power generation applications.

Combined with magniX’s Samson battery system, the HeliStorm series provides a comprehensive electric propulsion solution for rotorcraft. The first model in the lineup delivers peak power of 330kW while weighing just 75 kilograms.

The HeliStorm engines are engineered to operate at speeds of 6,000 to 7,000 RPM. They offer a significantly lighter alternative to turbine engines in similar aircraft. The system is designed with scalable power output ranges. It features industry-leading fault handling capabilities. Additionally, the engines provide airborne power generation, which extends the range of hybrid-electric platforms.

Launching the Electric Helicopter Age

magniX has drawn on its extensive flight test experience, including two separate integrations with Robinson R44 helicopters, to develop the HeliStorm engines. The first electric R44 helicopter powered by a magniX motor took flight on June 4, 2022, at Los Alamitos Army Airfield in California. This milestone marked a major step forward in electric aviation, leading to the world’s first point-to-point flight of an electric helicopter.

"The helicopter market represents a tremendous opportunity for magniX, as the strengths of our technology align well with the market need," said Reed Macdonald, CEO of magniX. "Our HeliStorm engines build on our existing world-class capabilities and offer a step-change in performance, reliability, and value for our customers. We look forward to bringing our innovative technology to another segment of the aviation industry."

Riona Armesmith, chief technology officer at magniX, emphasized the engine’s specialized design for vertical lift applications. "Our HeliStorm engines allow us to electrify a broader range of platforms, leveraging our unparalleled experience in powering aircraft with our industry-leading electric powertrains," she said.

David Smith, CEO of Robinson Helicopters, expressed support for magniX’s new engine series. "magniX has a proven track record in powering our R44 with their electric motors," Smith said. "Robinson is excited to continue collaborating with magniX to deliver market-leading, sustainable helicopters."
