PacStar is platinum award winner for Secure Wireless Command Post (SWCP) battlefield networking system
NASHUA, N.H. – Military & Aerospace Electronics and Intelligent Aerospace have recognized Pacific Star Communications Inc. (PacStar) in Portland, Ore., as a platinum-level winner in the publications' 2020 Innovators Awards for the company's Secure Wireless Command Post (SWCP).
The PacStar SWCP battlefield networking system is a small, modular communications package that enables warfighters to transmit classified and unclassified information securely in tactical settings while using their Wi-Fi and LTE-enabled commercial smartphones and tablet computers.
PacStar SWCP has proven transformation for military requirements because it marries a modular communications package of hardware and software that reduces the management burden for tactical high-security communications.
At the same time, PacStar shrunk the software/hardware package down to where it could be deployed practically in tactical environments. Prior to PacStar SWCP, it simply was not possible for DoD organizations to deploy CSfC in tactical settings.
The 2020 Military & Aerospace Electronics and Intelligent Aerospace Innovators Awards are to recognize products as solutions to difficult aerospace and defense systems design challenges. The awards are in three tiers: platinum, gold, and silver. The awards were announced on 7 Sept. 2020.
Executives of the Curtiss-Wright Corp. Defense Solutions division in Ashburn, Va., announced plans last week to acquire PacStar to boost Curtiss-Wright's expertise in global battlefield network operations applications.
The PacStar SWCP can provide secure, encrypted access to classified networks for smart mobile devices at the edge of the battlefield, and follow Commercial Solutions for Classified (CSfC) encryption requirements to provide warfighters with secure wireless access.
Communications experts in the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) look to industry to solve two complex challenges: how to deliver secure mobility to warfighters; and how to speed setup time at command posts in tactical environments, PacStar officials say.
The SWCP can help deployed warfighters transmit classified and unclassified information securely in tactical settings while using their Wi-Fi and LTE-enabled commercial smartphones and tablet computers.
Secure wireless tactical eliminates the need for miles of cabling and air-conditioned tents. Instead, warfighters can mount the units on tactical vehicles and pick-up and quickly move as the mission requires.
The PacStar SWCP marries a modular communications package of hardware and software that reduces the management burden for tactical high security communications. Company designers also shrunk the software and hardware package down to a form factor to deploy in tactical environments.
PacStar is fielding the SWCP with the U.S. Army Marine Corps in contracts that could be worth as much as $300 million, Company officials say.
