Engineers at L-3 Communications Link Simulation and Training (L-3 Link) in Arlington, Texas, sought a commercial off-the-shelf (COTS), open-architecture, real-time visual imaging tool for their work on a U.S. Navy project.
L-3 Link personnel selected the Independence IDX 2500 ER Image Generator with Quantum3D Inc. in San Jose, Calif., as part of an upgrade they are performing on the P-3C Tactical Operational Readiness Trainer (TORT) for the U.S. Navy.
The P-3C TORT is used to train the entire flight crew of the P-3C Orion, the Navy’s long-range, anti-submarine warfare patrol aircraft. The upgrade adds visual and sensor simulation systems that provide all the functionality of the aircraft’s sensor systems and also communicate recorded mission-critical data to other aircraft and command centers.
The Quantum3D IDX 2500 ER IG solutions employed by L-3 Link for the P-3C TORT upgrades provide P-3C flight crews with high-fidelity out-the-window (OTW) visual and sensor simulation channels. Its infrared and visual capabilities simulate combinations of Day TV and IR sensors used in the P-3C.
The IDX 2500 ER sensor simulation capabilities take advantage of Quantum3D Enhanced Sensor Simulation Technology (QUEST), combining Quantum3D COTS hardware and software technologies in a physics-based sensor simulation.
