U.S. military officials needed voice- communications radios for the U.S. Air Force Lockheed Martin C-5 Galaxy giant air transport jet. They found their solution in the AN/ARC-210 radio hardware from Rockwell Collins Inc. in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Collins, working under a $12 million contract from the U.S. Naval Air Systems Command in Arlington, Va., will modify each Air Force C-5 aircraft with two Collins RT-1794(C)/ARC-210 VHF/UHF radios, which will provide line-of-sight secure and non-secure voice communications.
The new radios also will provide 8.33 kHz channel spacing that is necessary to work with European air traffic controllers. The new radios also have embedded Have Quick, Have Quick II, and Single Channel Ground and Airborne Radio System - SINCGARS - electronic protection waveforms, communications security, and other data link and secure communications features.
The new radio also has a feature called automatic memory loader/verifiers, which enables users to reprogram the radio`s software to modify or add functions. - J.K.
