Brazil selects ITT to provide transportable precision approach radar system
June 1, 2009
Leaders of the Brazilian government needed a transportable radar system for precision aircraft approach, to guide aircraft onto the correct flight path for landing. They found the solution, the PAR-2000 radar system, from radar designers at ITT Corp. in Clifton, N.J.
ITT won a $9.4 million contract from CISCEA, part of the Brazilian Ministry of Defense. Under the contract, ITT will provide the transportable Precision Approach Radar (PAR)-2000 system. In addition, the contract provides for spares, training and long-term in-country support. ITT Radar Systems-Gilfillan originally sold four fixed PAR systems to Brazil in 1997. Last year, ITT was awarded a contract to upgrade these original systems; work commenced in 2008 and will conclude about five years later.
The transportable PAR-2000 system is designed to enhance Brazil’s radar capability at locations that do not have radar coverage. The system will also serve as an emergency backup to the current airspace management systems used Brazil’s air traffic control.
