Marines choose GE Aviation to provide inertial support for persistent surveillance systems
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., 9 Sept. 2012. U.S. Marine Corps leaders needed support for ground-based persistent-surveillance systems for deployed military operations. They found their solution from GE Aviation in Grand Rapids, Mich.
GE Aviation will support the Marine Corps Ground-Based Operation Surveillance System (G-BOSS) under terms of a $9 million contract, GE Aviation officials announced.
The contract includes the inertial reference unit, lab testing, integration, repairs, and engineering support for the program. GE engineers will do the work at the GE Aviation facility in Grand Rapids, Mich. Deliveries will start this year and finish in 2017.
The inertial reference unit uses inertial measurement technology and GPS receivers to help orient and position land vehicle, fixed-site installations, ships, and aircraft for surveillance, target acquisition, and satellite antenna pointing.
The reference unit combines inertial data and GPS data to provide the user with continuous location, heading, pitch, and roll data.
The G-BOSS is an integration of sensors to provide a beyond the fence surveillance capability. The Naval Surface Warfare Center in Crane, Ind., awarded the contract.
