Surface-mount pins for circuit boards that ease solder flow with machined-in channels offered by Mill-Max

Nail-head pins have grooves machined into the base of the pins that fill with solder paste when the pin is placed on the circuit board pad.

OYSTER BAY, N.Y. – Mill-Max Manufacturing Co. in Oyster Bay, N.Y., is introducing three series of surface-mount pins with the Sure-Hold grooved base design for applications where surface-mount connections are the only option, such as I/O and power connections.

Each pin has four channels machined into the surface mount base providing excellent solder flow and ensuring a secure soldered connection.

These new surface-mount pins are nail-head in style with two diameters: the base and post. The grooves, or channels, machined into the base of the pins fill with solder paste when the pin is placed on the circuit board pad, acting as a tread to maintain location.

During reflow soldering, the grooves promote capillary action for solder flow, which in turn secures the pin to the pad and discourages pin float for consistent pin positioning.

There are three post diameters to choose from: .04 inches, .06 inches, and .08 inches in part numbers 1440-X, 1460-X and 1480-X respectively. Each has a base diameter .06 inches larger than the post diameter, providing stable support during placement and soldering operations.

Sixteen pins are available with the 1440-X offered in lengths from 0.125 inches to 17.15 inches; the 1460-X from 0.2 to 0.8 inches; and the 1480-X from 0.25 to 0.680 inches. Standard plating options are pure tin or gold -- each with nickel under-plating.

These pins come in bulk packaging. For high volume applications, there are pin feeder options that work with exiting pick-and-place equipment. For more information contact Mill-Max online at www.mill-max.com/PR703.
