Abaco boosts rapidly configurable I/O know-how with acquisition of Technobox MMS line
HUNTSVILLE, Ala., 18 Nov. 2016. Executives of Abaco Systems in Huntsville, Ala., are boosting their company's expertise in rapidly configurable embedded computing I/O mezzanine cards with their acquisition of the Micro Mezzanine System (MMS) from Technobox Inc. of West Berlin, N.J.
The acquisition strengthens Abaco's capabilities in mission-ready systems based on open-architecture platforms for low risk and quick deployment, Abaco officials say. Financial details of the deal were not released.
The MMS range enables systems designer to configure the I/O required for almost any application; virtually thousands of combinations are possible, and avoids the expense and lead-time of custom development.
Abaco experts collaborated Technobox on the VPX carrier prior to the MMS product line acquisition. "I/O is a significant challenge for our customers as interconnection to multiple sources and outputs increases, while small size and low weight continue to define the latest generation of solutions," says Abaco CEO Bernie Anger.

At the heart of the MMS range is the Electrical Conversion Module (ECM) carrier, which is a PCI Mezzanine Card (PMC). An onboard field programmable gate array FPGA provides the ability to interface as many as four MMS modules to the host board.
Those modules support I/O functionality like digital-to-analog converters, analog-to-digital converters, RS485, RS422, RS-232, LVDS and DIO. Each module measures 1.25 square inches.
