Rugged Intel Core i7-based vetronics and avionics computer introduced by Curtiss-Wright

HIGH WYCOMBE, England, 17 Aug. 2012.Curtiss-Wright Controls Defense Solutions (CWCDS) in High Wycombe, England, is introducing the MPMC-9105 Versatile Mission Computer (FMC) Multi-Platform Mission Computer (MPMC) for vetronics and avionics applications.

The MPMC-9105 is an ultra compact rugged computer designed for space-, weight-, and power (SWaP)-constrained applications such as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), helicopters, and ground vehicles. This rugged embedded computer is for platforms requiring general processing with deep and diverse IO requirements including video.

Packaged in an environmentally sealed enclosure, the computer measures 278 millimeters wide by 278 millimeters wide by 230 millimeters deep by 85 millimeters high, and weighs 14.33 pounds configured with two XMC mezzanine modules and four solid-state drives.

The computer is "sealed to protect against contamination and humidity, cooled without fans, and powered with Intel's latest Core i7 processor," says Lynn Bamford, vice president and general manager of Curtiss-Wright Controls Defense Solutions.

The MPMC-9105 meets or surpasses MIL-STD-810F and MIL-STD-461, and meets a range of environmental tests including temperature, altitude, shock, vibration, fluid susceptibility, voltage spikes, and electrostatic discharge. The circuit cards installed in the sealed compact chassis are isolated from external environmental conditions such as humidity, dust, and sand.

Features include third-generation Intel Core i7 mobile processor; quad core 2.1 GHz; dual core 1.7 GHz; as much as 16 gigabytes DDR3 with ECC; eight gigabytes Flash storage; as much as four solid state drives (SSDs) for data storage; dual XMC sites PCI Express x8; optional support for two MilCAN-A interfaces with protocol offload; optional support for dual MIL-STD-1553; optional support for 16 x ARINC-429; 4 x 10/100/1000 BaseT Ethernet; 12 x async channels: RS232, RS422; video output options: Dual DVI, VGA, PAL, NTSC, RS170; GPIO, USB; 45-150 Watts Typ. Power; 28 VDC input per DEF-STAN 61-5 Part 6 Issue 6,MIL-STD-704, MIL-STD-1275; ITAR-free ; Support for Linux and Windows 7.

The MPMC-9105 FMC operates in external temperatures as high as 71 degrees Celsius. Direct thermal transfer is provided between devices and the system enclosure. Heat dissipates via the enclosure's external fins and conduction through the base.

Variants are available without fins for purely conduction-cooled applications, as well as for no fans, vehicle supplied air, liquid, or other demands from the platform within which it is deployed. Custom variations are available.
