HIGH WYCOMBE, UK, 6 June 2012. Curtiss-Wright Controls Defense Solutions (CWCDS), a business group of Curtiss-Wright Controls, has announced the newest member of its family of integrated COTS rugged multi-platform mission computer (MPMC) subsystems. The new system, the MPMC-9335, is a 3-slot rugged VPX system designed for quick configuration to meet the requirements of aerospace and defense applications, from laboratory settings to deployed ground vehicle environments. This subsystem is designed for space, weight and power (SWaP)-constrained vehicles such as UAVs and ground vehicles. With its latest generation quad-core Intel Corei7 single board computer (SBC) and 240-core NVIDIA Fermi GPGPU, the MPMC-9335 is especially well-suited for compute intensive applications on military embedded systems, such as image, data and radar processing. The MPMC-9335 was developed by Curtiss-Wright's Rugged Embedded Systems group in High Wycombe, UK. It delivers the processing power through its CWCDS 3U VPX VPX3-1256 quad core Intel-based SBC and 3U VPX VPX3-491 NVIDIA Fermi GPGPU-based compute engine, both of which are contained in a rugged enclosure that measures 250 cubic inches. The system weighs 14.5 lbs. when fully populated. As a rugged system, the MPMC-9335 operates in external temperatures up to 55C using baseplate cooling. The system's thermal management design enables system integrators to implement a processing system that requires no fans, vehicle supplied air, liquid or other demands from the vehicle it is deployed in. The MPMC-9335 comes with two (2) MilCAN offload controllers, a free VPX slot for a SSD memory module and an integrated heater to support cold-starts below -40C. The system's integrated 28 VDC power supply unit supports DEF-STAN 61-5 Part 6, Issue 6.
The MPMC-9335 is designed to meet the ruggedization standards of many military and aerospace computing applications. The MPMC-9335 has been designed to meet the requirements of DEF-STAN 00-35, DEF-STAN 59-411 Land Class A and DEF-STAN 00-65 Part 6 Issue 6. It has also been designed to pass environmental tests including Temperature, Altitude, Shock, Vibration, Fluid Susceptibility, Voltage Spikes, Electrostatic Discharge and more. Circuit cards installed in the sealed compact chassis are fully isolated from external environmental conditions such as humidity, dust and sand.
As a fully integrated off-the-shelf computing product, the MPMC-9335 delivers scale in production while meeting the I/O, performance and environmental requirements of military and aerospace programs. It features a rugged enclosure designed to the meet military specifications. This rugged computing system is designed to fill multiple roles in air and land vehicles.
The MPMC-9335 can be ordered as a modified commercial off-the-shelf (MCOTS) product with a modified front panel connector set, modified backplane wiring or a modified card set to meet different needs. You can contact Curtiss-Wright here for information on modifications.
