NATICK, Mass., 19 Sept. 2008.Multicore processors are gaining popularity rapidly in embedded computer motherboard applications, and soon will be the processors of choice in the single-board computer market, according to analysts at market researcher VDC Research Group Inc. in Natick, Mass.

Multi-core processors first appeared in embedded applications two years ago, yet only last year 20 percent of embedded desktop motherboards had multi-core x86 processors, VDC analysts say.

By 2010, however, nearly 50 percent of all embedded desktop motherboards in ATX, microATX, FlexATX, Mini-ITX, and related form factors will have multicore microprocessors, VDC analysts say.

Proliferation of small motherboards, such as Mini-ITX, is speeding the adoption of multi-core processors in the embedded motherboard market. The increased processing performance and power efficiency of multi-core processors also are driving adoption on embedded motherboards.
