Eye-piece displays for Army rifle and machine gun thermal weapon sights to be provided by Kopin

ORLANDO, Fla., 8 April 2010. Kopin Corp. in Taunton, Mass., is providing additional eye piece displays for U.S. Army thermal weapon sights under terms of a $27 million Army follow-on order from the Army Thermal Weapon Sight Bridge (TWS-IIB) program.

The order, which Kopin will fill over the next two years, is for a high-performance eyepiece that has been qualified in the TWS-IIB program after testing in harsh battlefield conditions. Kopin made the announcement this week at the SPIE Defense, Security, and Sensing conference and trade show in Orlando, Fla.

Kopin's TWS-IIB eyepiece is based on the company's low-power CyberDisplay 640M LVR display designed to operate at temperatures as low as -40 degrees Celsius with nearly instant-on capability, while dissipating less than 155 milliwatts during normal video operation.

Imaging system performance is consistent over the entire military temperature range, and the unit has been qualified for Light, Medium, and Heavy Thermal Weapon Sights (LTWS, MTWS, HTWS) for weapons such as the M14 and M4 rifles, the M2, M240, and M249 machine guns, and the M24 sniper rifle.
