MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., 9 April 2010. Aviation and air traffic control experts at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) are working with Honeywell International Inc. in Morristown, N.J. to outline the Integrated Intelligent Flight Deck (IIFD) project to enhance commercial aircraft automation in NextGen air traffic management operations.

Researchers at the NASA Ames Research Center in Mountain View, Calif., announced plans Wednesday to award a contract to Honeywell entitled Examination of Innovative Flight Deck Automation Technologies in the NextGen Operational Environment to design functions of future aircraft flight decks.

Honeywell experts will focus on the challenges of aircraft automation functions in the NextGen environment, paying particular attention to enhance safety and increase the capacity for commercial jetliner operations in airport terminal areas.
