Next-generation rugged display for U.S. Navy submarine upgrades to be provided by Barco
DULUTH, Ga., 4 May 2010. Systems integrators at the Lockheed Martin Corp. Mission Systems & Sensors segment in Manassas, Va., needed a rugged flat-panel display for its next-generation control consoles for U.S. Navy submarine upgrades. They found their solution in the RFD-357 rugged display from Barco in Duluth, Ga.
Lockheed Martin awarded a contract to Barco for 700 displays is in response to the Navy's tech insertion program that upgrades selected groups of vessels every two years.
The RFD-357 display satisfies the Navy's requirements for a high-resolution, rugged display for surface warships and submarines. The RFD-357 can accept and display input signals from sources such as radar, sonar, full motion video, infrared imagers, and satellite feeds.
The display's high resolution 1920-by-1200-pixel display is an active matrix liquid crystal display with backlight diffuser for uniform corner-to-corner image quality. The display runs in 10 bit mode and displays more than 1 billion displayable colors.
The RFD-357 incorporates Barco's intelligent thermal management system that radiates heat off the back of the display for efficient dissipation within the console housing. The displays meets MIL-S-901D, Grade A shock requirements for surface and sub-surface naval applications.
