Curtiss-Wright Adds NIST FIPS 140-2 Encrypted Memory Storage to its Rugged Network Attached Storage (NAS) Solutions
Vortex Compact Network Storage (CNS) NAS system now provides NIST-Certified AES256-bit encryption on its removable memory modules
ASHBURN, VA – April 22, 2013 – Curtiss-Wright Controls Defense Solutions (CWCDS), a business group of Curtiss-Wright Controls, has announced that its industry leading Vortex Compact Network Storage (CNS) rugged network attached storage (NAS) solution now supports solid-state Flash Storage Modules (FSM) that are certified to NIST FIPS 140-2 for secure data encryption. When configured with one or more Curtiss-Wright Vortex FSM modules, the CNS provides a scalable, low risk solution for deploying AES256-bit encrypted data in demanding defense and aerospace applications.
“Our Vortex CNS optimizes the sharing of mission critical data in harsh environments,” said Lynn Bamford, senior vice president and general manager of Curtiss-Wright Controls Defense Solutions. “Now, with the option to configure this rugged NAS with NIST FIPS 140-2 certified small form factor memory modules we provide our defense and aerospace customers with secure storage for their critical mission data.”
Vortex CNS can be easily configured with 2 FSM modules, which are currently in production, lowering schedule risk and speeding time to deployment. The AES256-bit encryption supported on the FSM’s delivers strong protection for data from network clients. The CNS provides flexible encryption key handling which can be configured for an applications’ CONOPS. Because Vortex CNS is scalable, it enables system designers to add encrypted FSM modules as needed, populating one of the CNS’ slots with an encrypted FSM today and adding another FSM later in the 2nd slot. Designed for optimal performance in harsh military applications, the rugged Vortex CNS supports a wide operating temperature range (-40 to +71C) and high levels of shock and vibration.
About the FSM Module
This high performance, rugged, high-capacity, solid-state SATA VPX3-1TB FSM storage card was designed for size, weight and power (SWaP) constrained military applications that require cryptography and must ensure the integrity of “data-at-rest” in demanding military environments such as those endured by transports, helicopters, UAVs and mobile radar systems. The compact small form factor module delivers 1 Terabyte (1TB) of SLC NAND flash memory and can be configured as a JBOD or RAID. To ensure the security of critical data, the FSM provides an NIST-certified AES256-bit data encryption capability.
About the CNS NAS
The small Vortex CNS package is designed for mounting on an ARINC tray on deployed platforms and provides up to 2TB of encryption solid state storage when configured with two (2) FSM modules. The CNS is “protocol-flexible” supporting CIFS, NFS, HTTP, FTP and PXE protocols on four (4) 1Gb Ethernet connections, making it ideal for sharing critical data in and across network centric systems. This rugged NAS solution is designed for use in a broad range of both manned and unmanned ground, air, and sea vehicles. The Vortex CNS can be integrated with one or two Curtiss-Wright Controls VPX3-FSM Flash Storage Modules to provide an extremely rugged, high-performance secure solution for sharing critical data in rugged environments.
