Curtiss-Wright’s New 7-inch Rugged Ground Vehicle Display Lowers the Cost of Adding General Purpose Video Imagery Monitoring
2019 NDIA GROUND VEHICLE SYSTEMS ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY SYMPOSIUM, NOVI, Mich. (Booth 214) – August 13, 2019 – Curtiss-Wright’s Defense Solutions division, a proven leading supplier of deployed video management solutions, has announced the further expansion of its family of rugged displays designed to meet the unique requirements of military ground vehicles. The new Rugged Video Display Unit (RVDU) is a 7-inch 800 x 480 pixel LCD display ideal for adding general purpose video imagery capability such as 360 degree situational awareness, rear-view reversing camera, equipment monitoring, and flexible display functionality to size, weight, power, and cost (SWaP-C) constrained platforms. System integrators seek low-cost display solutions that maintain reliability in harsh environments. Today, modern ground vehicles increasingly depend on a proliferation of mounted cameras to provide a view of the outside environment, such as a rear-view reversing camera. This camera imagery can be viewed in small, affordable displays that can, for example, aid in the prevention of accidents. The compact, widescreen RVDU supports up to two video inputs, which can be configured as either CVBS (composite video) inputs or digital. With superior viewing, the display’s ambient light sensors automatically change the screen brightness to the optimal setting for visibility in any light conditions, while its LED backlight provides a clear, crisp picture. The unit’s CAN bus control interface supports seamless software upgrades and eases interface with other Curtiss-Wright video management solutions such as those in the Rugged Video Gateway (RVG) product line.
“Increasingly, ground vehicle operators and crews are depending on mounted cameras to enhance their situational awareness and avoid accidents,” said Lynn Bamford, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Defense and Power. “With the introduction of our new low-cost, rugged 7-inch RVDU display we strengthen our commitment to providing the market with the widest offering of ground vehicle displays built to perform and maintain reliability in the battlefield where our warfighters require maximum situational awareness for mission success.”
RVDU Performance Features:
- 7 inch widescreen
- 800 x 480 pixels
- Video inputs:
- 2 x CVBS inputs
- 2 x digital inputs
- Control Interface
- 1 x CAN bus input
- Optional Projected Capacitive (PCAP) technology touchscreen
- Low latency
- Low SWaP
Built Rugged
The RVDU is built from the ground up to provide optimal performance in the harshest military environments. The IP65 rated display is housed in a fully sealed unit that eliminates the risk of sand or water ingress over the life of the product. Environmentally qualified to meet or exceed demanding military standards, the RVDU supports:
- MIL-STD-461 EMC
- MIL-STD-810 (-40°C to +85°C)
- Shock (non-operating) 75 G (half-sinusoid 6 ms)
- Vibration (non-operating) 2.3 G sinusoidal 20 to 500 Hz
Ease of Use
With buttons located on the front that enable the operator to control screen brightness, select the video input, and illuminate the keys for night mode, the RVDU is designed to maximize ease of use. The display is also available with an optional PCAP touchscreen that uses a conductive grid to create an electrostatic field, enabling RVDU users to very accurately control their visual data with the touch of one or multiple fingers, or via the use of a conductive stylus.
