Engineers from Laser Power Corp. in San Diego are developing a full-color helmet-mounted display to help train military aircraft pilots under a phase-2 Small Business Innovative Research contract from the U.S. Department of Defense. Laser Power designers are basing their helmet on their red, green, and blue solid-state microlasers. Laser Power designers are basing their helmet on their red, green, and blue solid-state microlasers. The display will provide resolution of 2,560 by 2,048 pixels, and yield a horizontal field of view of 80 degrees per eye. Laser Power engineers are building the helmet to interface with advanced image generators. Company officials say they also intend to apply their helmet-mounted display to other applications such as medical, scientific, engineering, and home television.
