U.S. Navy officials needed video tape recorders rugged enough for their fleet of McDonnell Douglas AV-8B Harrier carrier-based jump jets, and found what they needed from TEAC America in Montebello, Calif.
TEAC won a Navy contract last December to provide 209 of its V-80AB-F Hi-8mm airborne video tape recorders - with an option for 20 more - for a program to upgrade the Harrier. Company officials, through the Navy, will offer these devices to Spain and Italy under the foreign military sales program for the Harriers those countries operate.
"We believe that the proven quality, technical performance, and demonstrated high reliability of the TEAC V-80AB-F recorder reduces total lifecycle costs, while increasing squadron operational readiness and ease of maintenance support," says David Husted, TEAC America vice president and division manager of TEAC Airborne Video Products.
TEAC engineers build their recorders for several military environments and qualify them to Mil-Std 810D and Mil-Std-461C. The units are environmentally sealed against moisture, sand, and dust, while tapes are locked in place to resist the forces acceleration, tight turns, shock, and vibration. - J.K.
