ARLINGTON, Va., 23 Feb. 2006. Engineers at the Government Electronics and Information Association (GEIA) in Arlington, Va., are releasing a new guide to systems configuration management, GEIA officials announced today.
The guide is GEIA HB-649, a companion handbook to aid in the implementation of ANSI/EIA 649, National Consensus Standard for Configuration Management. The GEIA is part of the Electronic Industries Association (EIA).
The handbook provides implementation guidelines for a variety of techniques and examples that designers may choose for tailoring to specific situations and programs. This reference document is for experienced and new configuration managers, and is a guide to configuration management in accordance with ANSI/EIA-649 and other industry standards, GEIA officials say.
The GEIA's G-33 task group worked the past four years to compile the information, suggestions, and examples in this handbook. In 2001, the G-33 committee recognized a need to provide additional "how to" implementation guidance for implementing ANSI/EIA-649, GEIA officials say.
The committee members decided on a handbook to focus on providing real use examples, case studies, and alternative approaches for each of the principles in ANSI/EIA-649.
The handbook provides a framework for making prudent and cost-effective choices regardless of configuration-management requirements, project or product size and complexity, customer, or business objectives.
Configuration management as a discipline improves the capabilities, performance, reliability, and maintainability of the product by identifying attributes and by controlling information and changes.
The handbook is available from the GEIA online store at www.geia.org.
