BILLERICA, Mass., 31 March 2010. American Science and Engineering Inc. (AS&E), a supplier of X-ray detection solutions, won a service and maintenance order for $2.5 million from the U.S. government to support Z Backscatter Van (ZBV) X-ray inspection systems for strategic missions in harsh environments.

Anthony Fabiano, president and CEO of AS&E is proud to deliver service and support for the U.S. government's fleet of ZBVs deployed overseas for critical counterterrorism operations. A non-intrusive mobile inspection system, the ZBV supports efforts to uncover vehicle-borne explosives and other contraband.

AS&E also received a $3 million order from a Middle Eastern government for multiple Z Backscatter Vans (ZBV). Configured for harsh environments, the ZBVs will be utilized for counterterrorism applications including securing government facilities and mobile checkpoints. The order includes AS&E provided operator training, service, and warranty; and multiple Forwardscatter units.

AS&E's Z Backscatter Van non-intrusive mobile inspection system is a mobile screening system built into a commercially available delivery van. The ZBV allows for immediate deployment in response to security threats and its high throughput capability facilitates rapid inspection. The system's "drive-by" capability allows operators to conduct X-ray imaging while the ZBV drives past suspect vehicles and objects. For personnel safety in dangerous environments, a remote console is available for operating the system in stationary mode from a distance of up to 500 meters.
