High-reliability intelligent power modules (IPMs) for uses in variable-speed drives introduced by Infineon
MUNICH – Infineon Technologies AG in Munich is introducing the IM523 series of the CIPOS Mini family of efficient intelligent power modules (IPMs) to control three-phase motors in low- and medium-power variable-speed drives for industrial fans, drives as strong as 1.4 kilowatts, and heating, ventilation, and air conditioning.
These power electronics devices are based on the 600-volt reverse conducting drive 2 (RCD2) insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) technology, and come with an open emitter.
The CIPOS IM523 series enables integration of power and control components to increase reliability and optimize printed circuit board size as well as system cost.
The RCD2 IGBTs are combined with a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) gate driver to enable low-power dissipation of the system. The three-phase inverter configurations with open emitters are integrated in a DIP 36x21 package.

The package concept is adapted to power applications that need good thermal conduction and electrical isolation. The series delivers energy efficiency especially in applications with high switching frequency.
The high-reliability power devices are available in different current ratings from 6 to 17 amps, with a breakdown voltage of 600 volts. A built-in, UL-certified NTC thermistor for temperature monitoring, undervoltage lock-out (UVLO) at all channels, and overcurrent protection feature (OCP) further enhance the system reliability.
Package and mold compound offer improved humidity robustness. Additionally, the IPMs integrate a bootstrap circuit to simplify the circuit board layout. Design conversion of existing Mini IPMs (P2P) is possible without circuit board redesign.
