The Model 885 Wing/Pylon quick disconnect connector from G&H Technology in Camarillo, Calif., now qualifies for inclusion on all U.S. Navy Boeing F/A-18 (Hornet/Super Hornet) strike fighter aircraft.
G&H engineers have already produced more than 4,000 of the devices for use in early models of the F/A-18. The latest qualification tests certify the Model 885 for use on F/A-18E/F.
The G&H Model 885 provides electrical power and signaling between the wing structures and pylon. It features automatic contact retraction, and provides quick shell uncoupling for safe removal of the pylon, or in-flight jettisoning.
The device has self-aligning contacts for ease of installation. It has 360-degree RFI/EMI shielding, environmental sealing, and visual "ready-to-mate" and "full-mate" indicators.
All F/A-18 models require six of the Model 885 connectors — three on each wing. Those produced for the F/A-18C and D models have 140-contact inserts. Those produced for the F/A-18 E and F models have 121 contacts and are designed for wet mounting — which permits the connector to mount directly to a fuel tank without danger of leakage. — J.M.
