BALTIMORE, 29 May 2013. U.S. Coast Guard officials needed shipboard power electronics equipment for the service's 210-foot Reliance-class and 270-foot Famous-class cutters. They found their solution from ASCO Power Technologies, a business unit of Emerson Network Power in Florham Park, N.J.
The Coast Guard Surface Forces Logistics Center in Baltimore is recommending several pieces of power shipboard electronics equipment, including power switching units, automatic bus transfer, switch box, and circuit card assemblies from ASCO for the Reliance- and Famous-class medium-endurance cutters.
Coast Guard officials say they plan to award a non-competitive, fixed-price, sole-source contract to ASCO Power or an authorized representative or distributor for the power electronics equipment.
The Coast Guard is looking for the ASCO Power A94231009A3D 450-volt 60 Hz 100-amp power switching unit; the A94231509A3D 450-volt 60 Hz 150-amp power switching unit; the A94233009A3D 450-volt 60 Hz 300-amp power switching unit; the A9423509A3D 450-volt 60 Hz 50-amp automatic bus transfer; the A94231003A3D 120-volt 60 Hz 100-amp switch box; and the 798962-015 circuit card assembly for the ships.
The Coast Guard's medium-endurance cutters primarily are for law-enforcement duties, particularly for enforcing the U.S. 200-mile exclusive economic zones off the nation's coasts. These cutters are large enough for crew members to live aboard, and can go to sea for missions lasting six to eight weeks.
There are 13 vessels in the Famous class, and 14 vessels in the Reliance class. Coast Guard leaders plan eventually to phase out both of these cutters and replace them with the Offshore Patrol Cutter as part of the Integrated Deepwater System Program.
For shipboard power aboard the Reliance- and Famous-class cutters, Coast Guard officials say they believe only ASCO Power can build this equipment to specifications and compatibility with existing shipboard power gear. Furthermore, the Coast Guard does not have data rights to the ASCO Power equipment.
