Researchers to brief industry on large-area photocathodes project for high-power microwaves and electronics

ARLINGTON, Va. – U.S. military researchers will brief industry on Friday 18 Oct. 2024 on an upcoming project to develop large-area photocathodes for high-power microwaves transmission systems such as photomultiplier tubes, image intensifiers, and free electron lasers.

Officials of the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) in Arlington, Va., will conduct industry-day briefings in person and online via Microsoft Teams from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on 18 Oct., for the Large-Area Photocathodes (LAP) project. In-person briefings will be at 4121 Wilson Blvd., in Arlington, Va.

Photocathode materials also can be used in high-power electronics. Low-work function metals or semiconductors typically are applied in sub-micron thicknesses on planar millimeter to centimeter-scale areas.

Briefings are to promote additional discussion on; address questions; and enable potential proposers to present their capabilities for teaming opportunities.

LAP seeks manufacturable material systems for large-area photocathodes with high quantum efficiency that can be produced in large areas with substantial lifetimes and manageable handling requirements. The project will produce photocathodes that the government will incorporate into a subscale high-power microwave transmitter prototype system.
