Power low-side driver for intelligent switch control in high-reliability avionics introduced by Holt
ALISO VIEJO, Calif. – Holt Integrated Circuits in Aliso Viejo, Calif., is introducing the I-84216 smart 16-channel low-side driver for high-reliability avionics applications. A low-side driver controls the lower switch of the power device.
The device uses a serial peripheral interface (SPI) for intelligent switch control, monitoring, and advanced diagnostics, and can 250 milliamps per channel with as much as 4 amps total sink current for parallel channel operation.
The HI-84216 includes protection features such as a thermal fail-safe mechanism and overcurrent shutdown on a per-channel basis with flexible retry options.

The low-side driver measures the global die temperature and output current of each channel using an 8-bit A/D converter. Users may program high and low current threshold limits for over-current and open load detection, and can enable hardware and software interrupts on a per-channel basis for monitoring individual load-current status.
The integrated 8-bit A/D converter measures channel current and temperature which it stores in registers as 8-bit binary words, and reads current and temperature via host-initiated SPI opcodes.
A programmable internal PWM clock generator can operate on a per channel basis across a frequency range of 24 Hz to 48 kHz, with 16-bit resolution pulse width and period.
The HI-84216 is available in a 6-by-6-millimeter 48-pin plastic QFN package and offers industrial temperature ranges of -40 to 85 degrees Celsius, and extended temperature ranges of -55 to 125 C with optional burn-in.
