LEMO connector protective coating wins platinum in 2016 Technology Innovation Awards
Nov. 28, 2016
NASHUA, N.H., 28 Nov. 2016. Rugged connector specialists at LEMO SA in Ecublens, Switzerland, have received a platinum award in the 2016 Military & Aerospace Electronics and Intelligent Aerospace Technology Innovation Awards for the company's NiCorAl protective coating for rugged circular push-pull connectors.
The award to the LEMO NiCorAl protecting coating is part of the top of three tiers of this year's Technology Innovation Awards. The top award level is platinum, the middle tier is gold, and the third tier is silver.
Military & Aerospace Electronics and Intelligent Aerospace made awards to company entries that offer solutions to difficult aerospace and defense electronics design challenges. The awards were presented on 14 Nov. 2016.
The NiCorAl coating for rugged circular push-pull connectors is a green alternative to cadmium and chrome VI coatings for aluminum-body connectors that must operate in harsh conditions such as salt spray.

The protective coating satisfies guidelines of RoHS 2 and REACh 2017 without compromising corrosion resistance. Using reduced levels of chemicals, it offers 500 hours of corrosion resistance without using Chrome 6 in the process.
The NiCorAl coating is suitable for aluminum-bodied connectors that operate in harsh environments in which light weight, durability, and environmental factors play an increasingly important role.
The protective coating is an anthracite gray-colored nickel Teflon composite coating that requires 15 microns thickness for 500 hours of corrosion resistance, while competing approaches require 30 microns thickness, company officials say.
