General Dynamics wins $1.8 Billion for Construction of Two Zumwalt-class DDG-1000 Destroyers

Posted by Courtney E. HowardBATH, Maine, 16 Sept. 2011. General Dynamics Bath Iron Works, a subsidiary of General Dynamics (NYSE:GD), won from the U. S. Navy a $1.8 billion contract to construct the next two ships in the Zumwalt-class program: the DDG 1001 and DDG 1002. DDG 1001 is more than 50 percent complete and scheduled to be delivered in December 2015, whereas the DDG 1002 is scheduled to be delivered in February 2018.

The U.S. Navy's next-generation, guided-missile, Zumwalt-class naval destroyer, the DDG-1000 features a low radar profile, an integrated power system, and a total-ship computing environment infrastructure. The Zumwalt-class destroyers accommodate a range of weapons and will provide offensive, distributed, and precision fires in support of forces ashore.

Work on the contract is currently underway at the Bath, Maine, shipyard on DDG 1001 and DDG 1002.

Congress previously approved funding for advanced procurement and initial construction of these ships.
