NORWOOD, Mass., 6 Jan. 2010. Analog Devices Inc. (ADI) in Norwood, Mass., is introducing the ADF4158 PLL synthesizer for frequency modulated continuous wave radar systems in military, aerospace, communications, industrial, and automotive applications.

The 6.1 GHz programmable ADF4158 enables systems designers to implement FM continuous-wave radar with a linear ramp profile that is independent of voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) linearity to improve radar resolution, ADI officials say. FMCW radar systems can deliver detection and ranging at lower power levels than traditional pulsed radar.

The ADF4158 is based on BiCMOS process technology, has a 25-bit modulus for sub-hertz frequency resolution; frequency and phase modulation; generates saw-tooth and triangular waveforms in the frequency domain, parabolic ramp, ramp with frequency-shift keying (FSK) superimposed, and ramp with two different sweep rates; has ramp delay, ramp frequency readback and ramp interruption; and runs on a 2.7-to-3.3-volt power supply.
