Current Status of UAVs (Drones) and Trends in Applied Wireless Communication Technologies

According to a Morgan Stanley forecast, the global market for electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) drones is expected togrow to $1.5 trillion by 2040 (Fig. 1), outpacing the current aircraft industry (approximately $1.3 trillion). eVTOL is expected to play anew transport role positioned between aircraft and automobiles.

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), also known as drones, are coming into practical use worldwide. UAVs are being studied for thefollowing applications, with high expectations for providing services helping to solve social issues.

  • Offer services provided by airplanes, helicopters, etc., at lower cost
  • Record video for entertainment and personal use
  • Use in hazardous locations where people cannot work, or at disaster-relief sites
  • Improve efficiency of agriculture and transport to solve issues of aging society and declining birthrate
  • Offer new transport means making maximum use of 3D space
