OTTAWA, Ontario - The  Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA) announced its plans to install computed tomography (CT) technology at security screening checkpoints at several airports across Canada over a multi-year period. CATSA, like the United States Transportation Security Administration, performs pre-board and baggage screening duties and says that CT scans enhance their ability to look for dangerous objects.

The new CT scanners have been rolled out at Vancouver International Airport, marking the first complete installation. The technology uses 3D rotatable images to help security officers more effectively identify explosives and other potential threats. For passengers, this means liquids, aerosols, gels (under 100 mL), medical devices, and large electronics can remain in their carry-on bags during screening.

The project, a collaboration between CATSA and the Vancouver Airport Authority, is the start of a national rollout, with plans for additional installations at other airports beginning in fall 2024 and continuing over the next several years. Close coordination with airport authorities is key to the deployment's success.

"We're focused on implementing state-of-the-art solutions that contribute to an enhanced screening experience while ensuring the highest levels of security. While the deployment of this technology spans over several years, we're excited about the positive change it will bring to the overall passenger experience," said CATSA President and CEO Nada Semaan.

Transport Minister Pablo Rodriguez echoed the sentiment, saying, "It's great to see this innovative use of technology in action. This will make security screening more effective and improve the passenger experience for Canadians and tourists in our airports across Canada."

Vancouver Airport CEO Tamara Vrooman highlighted the local investment, stating, "With this innovative system, you can now move through security effortlessly—no need to remove liquids, aerosols, gels, or large electronics from your carry-on bags—while maintaining the highest security standards. Our $30 million investment has expanded and modernized this space with the traveler in mind."
