Radiation-hardened electronics for new and traditional space applications webinar to take place August 25
NASHUA, N.H. - Protecting sensitive electronics from radiation is a top priority in keeping satellites operational. Global demand for affordable satellite communications in applications ranging from cell phone connectivity and television content, to space-based military and agriculture surveillance and monitoring are driving huge increases in small satellites and the radiation-hardened electronics that make them function effectively.
Military & Aerospace Electronics will host a trio of industry experts for a webinar on August 25 at 1 p.m. EDT to go into detail on today's needs for new space and traditional space radiation-hardened components; radiation-hardened test and measurement issues; and the future of using plastic parts and other affordable approaches to space electronics.
It is this need for radiation hardening that focuses the electronics industry's efforts on developing components like microprocessors, power-management devices, and solid-state memory that are inexpensive to buy, yet resilient enough to survive in space for periods ranging from weeks to years.
Today's satellites operate in many different orbits, each with different requirements for radiation hardening. The durations of these missions can last from months to decades, which also vastly influences requirements for protecting sensitive onboard satellite electronics from space-based radiation.
Presenters include Anthony Jordan, who is the director of business development at Cobham Advanced Electronic Solutions Inc.; Michael Tostanoski, the founder of Radiation Test Solutions; and Anton Quiroz, the CEO of Apogee Semiconductor.
Jordan has been at Cobham for 33 years and brings 38+ years of semiconductor experience to the company. Anthony has held various product marketing, design, and applications engineering positions receiving several patents.
Tostanoski has been involved for over 40 years in modeling, simulating, and testing of electro-optical, analog, digital, and mixed signal components in radiation environments which include gamma, proton, heavy ion, and neutron. He managed and directed all radiation test activity for focal plane testing on the Raytheon EKV program. In addition to corporate responsibilities, Mike continues to lead the Single Event Effects group at RTS and consults for the 5th Gait Technologies radiation test group.
Quiroz has over 16 years of experience in the semiconductor industry and over a decade in the aerospace and defense industry. As the CEO of Apogee Semiconductor, he led the successful release of a family of innovative radiation hardened products in plastic packaging and continues to expand the space plastic integrated circuit roadmap. At Apogee Semiconductor, he and his team have pioneered the utilization of reliable commercial processes to reduce the cost of rad-hard components from silicon design and manufacturing, to package assembly and testing.
