Half-chip PRM power electronics device from V.I Chip offers 200 Watts of power in a half-square-inch package

V.I Chip, a subsidiary of Vicor Corp. in Andover, Mass., is introducing the PRM48BH480T200A00 half-chip pre-regulator module (PRM) power electronics device for medium- to low-power applications with limited space such as server processors and memories, ATE systems, and LED drivers.

V.I Chip, a subsidiary of Vicor Corp. in Andover, Mass., is introducing the PRM48BH480T200A00 half-chip pre-regulator module (PRM)power electronics device for medium- to low-power applications with limited space such as server processors and memories, ATE systems, and LED drivers.

The 16.5-by-22.0-by-6.7-millimeter half-chip package is 97 percent efficient at 200 Watts with the same power density as a 400-Watt full-size PRM.

The PRM48BH480T200A00 operates from 48 volts DC (38 to 55 volts) to generate a regulated, adjustable 5-to-55-volt output. The ZVS Buck -- Boost topology and high switching frequency (~1 MHz) operation enable high efficiency and reduced size to reach power density of 1,300 Watts per cubic inch.

The half-chip PRM can be used as a stand-alone, non-isolated voltage regulator or combined with full-chip or half-chip VTM current multipliers for an isolated DC-DC solution direct to the point-of-load, with fast transient response and isolation to 2,250 volts DC.
